Our History

With over 25 years of rich history, Mountain Air is one of the most celebrated and iconic mountain communities in Western North Carolina. The community’s continued success is due, in large part, to the thoughtful development acumen of the Banks and Young families.

Since the establishment of the community in the early 1990s, the collective aim of both families has been to create a mountaintop retreat unparalleled in its physical beauty and charm. Undertaking one of the country’s most challenging residential development projects, the Banks and Young families brought their expertise in lumbering and heavy construction to surmount Slickrock Mountain’s 4,919 feet of elevation and sheer outcroppings of granite. The end result was not only a testament to the families’ perseverance and vision but also to the ingenuity of modern engineering.

The character of the Mountain Air community has only been enhanced by the enduring commitment to quality, elevated living. From the Mountain Air Country Club, built of native timber and stone, and the mountain market offering gourmet groceries and vintage wines, to the Slickrock Village Green and the seven miles of hiking trails…it’s the thoughtful details that make Mountain Air so special.
